I recently read a great paper by a cousin named Hoyt Harmon on the origins of the information contained in the famous book, The Harmon Geneaology (comprising All Branches in New England) compiled and edited by Artemas C. Harmon in 1920. The information contained therein originated in a survey sent out by a Judge G.W. Harmon in the 1880s. This sparked an idea in me.
To quote Judge Harmon:
DEAR SIR [or MADAM]:
I am engaged in collecting vital statistics to enable me to construct a genealogical list of those bearing the surname of Harmon or Harman.
I will thank you to fill the blank form upon opposite page, so far as you can with your own family, after the manner shown below, and to remit it to me...
[Example:]
My full name: George Washington Harman.
I was born in Pawlet, VT., on the 7th day of May, AD 1812.
Father's full name: Nathaniel Harman.
He was born in Pawlet, VT., on the 5th day of May, AD 1779
[etc.]
Once I've collected a sufficient amount of data, I'll begin posting it to the net. Through this, I hope to create an updated Harmon Genealogy, comprising all branches on the Net.
